Let me start by showing you a franchise that works:

Franchising can be a quick way of reaching out to new markets and exploiting the potential of your enterprise, if done correctly and with the right support.
It could also give the independent established mobile bicycle mechanic business a bad name, if not done with the right care and support.

( There are also hydraulic rim brakes and electric bikes) If you think you can learn everything in a 2 week course you will be wrong! It takes years of experience, continues training courses and product knowledge before you can run a successfully business." Martin.

Once you know what you need to start your own business and how to find customers, you can go out on your own prepared and there is no need to join a franchise and pay fee's:

It's in the fanchisors interest to sell you a franchise, so they may well be optimistic in projections of earnings. You have to consider worse case scenarios, also factor in contingency money in case of emergency costs arising and be prepared not to make any money for at least a year. (3 years is the norm) It will all depend how long they have been in business, on there extensive promotional support and marketing blitz. This takes time to build a brand, for customers to think that your service is worthy of purchasing and think of your business product first. You need to research the pros & con's of a franchise vs starting a new business before you make a final decision. You should talk with other franchisees first. Also, should a franchisor change ownership or fail, the future of your franchise will be thrown into doubt. Likewise, the actions of your fellow franchisees will have an impact upon your image and, therefore sales.

A key sign that the franchises are more likely to succeed than other start-ups is the average time a franchisee has been running their business. In 2007, according the Natwest survey, the average time in business was over 7 years.

Several hundred cyclists turned up, quite a few discovering that bits were hanging off and pumps didn't work. Dr Sludge was a good quick fix for a start line puncture with a couple of minutes to go. All fixes were free, with a suggestion of a donation to the charities being supported. Nice to receive a thank you phone call for the simple fix of refitting a mudguard.

The customer told me he brought the bike on-line, on eBay!

When I was sizing him to the bike, I asked how did he know what size frame to order.

His reply was: "I tried the bike in the local bike shop, ordered on-line and saved money."

Sounds good to me the customer saves money and a mobile bike mechanic gets the job! And hopefully he calls me again when the bike needs servicing. I can also show him what pressure his tyres should be and sell him a pump, can of oil, spare tube, ect......

How many bikes go back for a first service? Which is recommended between 4 - 6 weeks of buying your bicycle. I gave the customer good advice and hope to see him for his bikes first service.

There is good opportunity for the mobile bicycle mechanic, to offer there service.

The question is:

Is this good in the long term for the bicycle industry?

Should bicycles be sold in a box, not built?

What does Specialized think of having there bikes sold this way?

What happens when there is a warranty issue?

The answer:

There is no easy answer. Not going to stop buying on-line. The consumer expects a lot these days.

You should always ask when you buy on-line: What are the terms when there is a warranty issue!

There are official on-line shops that offer a good customer service and sell bikes in a box that have been inspected by qualified mechanics.

Those new or back into cycling may buy the wrong type and size of bicycle. Also remember carbon frames only have 2 years warranty

I don't think bicycles should be sold, with out a pre-delivery inspection. As this could stop the consumer enjoying cycling or even have a dangers bike out on the road if not assembled correctly.

Had a great day and met 3 new members and a member who joined 3 months ago from London, who was kind enough to drive me to the show in Birmingham.

Everybody was introduced to the company and there area reps who opened up there accounts. We all had a tour of the company's warehouse and viewed there products on display. I provided a stock list of essential parts and there was a discount for buying on the trade day!

Trade shows are always a good place to meet and to be introduced to suppliers. And is a good chance to chat with me and ask questions. The key to your business, is dealing with good suppliers. "Giving you a big step in starting your business"

Just spent 2 days at Velotech Cycling Ltd Training Centre. The course is run by Graeme Freestone King. Graeme is very knowledgeable and has been in bicycle trade for 30 years. Training Centre and workshop: Adjacent to Longstaff Cycles, Albert Street, Chesterton, Staff ST5 7JF (Longstaff cycles are internationally known for their quality work in steel framebuilding. Seeing there workshop is worth a visit.)

Day 1 - Ergopower Levers In this module we looked at compatibility, of full components and internal parts, and how to strip and re-assemble the three main drop-bar variants and known issues. (Escape, Ultra Shift 10,11 speed) – OEM and frame specification. Correct dimensions for the frame, Correct preparation, Tolerances and Known issues .

Day 2 – G3 wheels Concept, Spoke types & fitting methods, Nipples and fitting methods, Tensioning and truing. - UltraTorque & PowerTorgue. Fitting the UT system into conventional BB shells, Fitting UT systems into BB30 type-frames, Changing the bearings, Known issues. Hubs - Fully sealed bearing hubs, Oversize hubs, Freehub body compatibilities.

I first had this idea in October 2009 and I was delighted when Martin Wilkins was already doing it in the UK. In fact I told him that it was already successful in Holland and Germany. Before bleeding hydraulic brakes:

Identify the braking system as mineral oil or DOT brake fluid.
Remove wheels and brake pads.
Clean calliper pistons and bleed nipple ports with brake cleaner spray.
Push pistons back and fit retaining block.
Now bleed brakes as manufactures recommendations

As a mobile bicycle mechanic I get called out to a lot of new bicycles that have been brought on-line, on the cycle to work scheme and flat packs. From £300.00 to bicycles costing well over £2000.00. That have not been set-up properly!

Many customers are new to cycling and have not been explained, when it comes to warranty!
And are not taking there new bicycles back for there first service. Which should be carried out between 4 and 6 weeks from new. This should include gear and brake adjustments and all alen key bolts checked.

I am also finding many cyclists are riding the wrong size bicycle. This is the down side to buying a new bicycle on-line.

How many riders are told when they buy there new bicycle. If there bicycle is not regular serviced the warranty is void ?

Who is responsible for warranty.
The rider, manufacture, selling a bicycle in a box or the seller not educating the customer when buying a new bicycle?

Some of the conditions to be aware of that may apply in a warranty clam.
The warranty is void if:
The bicycle has not been entirely assembled by an authorized retailer.
Its original purchaser no longer owns the bicycle.
The instructions contained in the user’s manual have not been respected.
The regular inspections recommended in the user’s manual have not been done.
The frame is too big or too small for the customer.
Forks:
The factory warranty period for your fork/shock is one year (two years for countries in the EU) from the original date of purchase of the bicycle or fork/shock.

Should all bicycles sold have been pre delivery inspected? No matter where sold, on-line, cycle 2 work scheme, supermarket or Bike shop. Or should it reflect in the price? If sold cheap, it is ok to be sold in a box?

A bicycle should be serviced at least once a year and a check over in between.

If you use your bicycle everyday in all weather conditions or off road use, then a service should include a strip down of bottom bracket, headset and hub bearings, for inspection, clean and re-grease. Even sealed bearings. Every 3 months.

Continental Cyclocross Race Tyres 700 x 35c 85psi

Cyclo Cross covers the whole season of weather conditions. In the early months when the ground is hard and dry riders favour fast rolling tyres with smoother tread to give them enough grip but allow them to utilise the fast conditions. A typical width of tyre for dry conditions ranges from 30-34mm. For wet and slippery conditions in the mud, tyres with extra grip are the preferred choice. With knobbly tread remaining narrow at around 30mm, the narrower the tyre the better it will cut through the mud. The air pressure in a tyre can be vital in order to cope with the conditions and can make a huge difference to the feel and performance of the bicycle. In the dry, higher pressures can be run (typically 65-75PSI) which will roll fast and provide enough grip with the firm ground. However, when the ground is wet the lower the pressure the more grip the tyre will have. The problem that can arise with normal clincher tyres (with a bead that is inflated by and inner tube onto the rim) is that running low pressures can cause the inner to be pinched and puncture. For this reason many who ride in cross races will prefer to use tubular or 'sew ups' as they are a self contained unit glued onto the rim and remove run the danger of pinch punctures. Many who use tubular tyres will run around 50 PSI when the ground is muddy. Tubes can also be ridden on without the tyre rolling, so if the rider does puncture the cycle can be ridden carefully back to the pits for a spare. It is worth spending time looking for the correct tyre and is a worthwhile investment as good quality rubber will perform well, last longer and is less likely to puncture. Above all, mechanical failures can affect the result in these gruelling races, so using the correct equipment is vital.

Cyclo-Cross is a strange mix of off road riding and road cycling. Originating from Belgium the sport pre dates mountain biking and was the original form of off road that riders used during the winter to keep themselves fit, improve strength and increase their bicycle handling skills. The races take place on off road circuits normally of around one mile in length that include a mixture of rough wooded sections, grass areas, technical sections, barriers that have to be run across and sharp slopes to be ridden or run up and then descended. This means that successful riders need to have great bike skills, aerobic endurance, explosive power and the ability to jump on and off the cycle without breaking their rhythm and run. Races last around an hour and are a true test of fitness and skill as anyone who has ridden narrow tyres off road can testify. The season lasts from September through to January which means that the bikers have to cope with all kinds of conditions through the winter from sun and dry ground to snow and ice.

Frames & Forks:

Cyclo Cross bicycles look to the untrained eye just like a standard road bicycle. You might notice the nobbly tyres and the different brake systems, but with drop handlebars, 700c wheels and road components they are hard to differentiate.

Frames:
The fames differ greatly from road versions with geometries that have shorter top tubes for a more upright and controlled position (similar to that on mountain bike). They have higher bottom brackets for clearance when hopping over obstacles and even greater clearance for the pedals from the rough terrain. Frames can be manufactured in a number of materials including steel, aluminium, carbon and titanium but in general they will be heavier than their road alternatives as they are made to be stiff and strong to cope with the high stresses that they have to withstand. The main triangle tends not to include water bottle cages as they interfere with the rider's ability to throw the bike over the shoulder when running. Top tubes also tend to be flat for comfort on the shoulder and the cabling is routed over the top of the top tube so that it cannot be caught on the cyclist or obstacles.

Forks:

As with road bikes the forks are rigid and designed for the 700C wheels, however, they differ as they are designed to give increased clearance for wider tyres and mud. They are also designed to allow cantilever brakes to be fitted onto special bosses. Manufacturers produce forks in steel, aluminium and more commonly carbon. Full carbon forks are stiff, lightweight and can cope with the worst that the demanding sport of cross has to offer.

Pedals:

With the amount of running that is involved the preferred choice of pedals and shoes are those used for MTB riding. The pedals such as various SPD systems are good at shedding mud and can be clipped in from both sides which can be essential when jumping on and off the bike. The cleats are small and are recessed into the shoes amongst the tread on the bottom of the footwear so that they do not interfere when running. The shoes are designed with stiff soles that are still flexible enough to be run on with studs and have enough tread to give good grip when running on slippery ground and the steep slopes which are common place.
Gears:

The gear ratios used on the bicycles tend to be easier than on the road in order to cope with the slower terrain and sharp slopes. Typically on a road bike the chainsets run 53/39 on the chainset and 12-25 on the cassette. However, cyclo cross bikes use compact sets typically using 48-36 and 12-27 on the cassette. This will depend on the nature of the course being ridden, but in general these ratios will provide enough range to cope with the challenging terrain that most courses are made up of. Apart from the gearing the gear systems are standard road components from the manufacturer's groupsets ranges from Campagnolo and Shimano. Ten speed is standard with these companies, but many who race cyclo cross still prefer to run older nine speed components as the wider spacing of the gears can be less prone to clog with mud. However the difference is so small that most are moving to ten speed.

Brakes:

Nearly all cyclo cross bikes will run cantilever brakes that work using a simple cable pulley system, although design can vary between manufacturers. They offer great clearance with their minimal look and can cope with the muddiest of conditions as they are designed not to clog up and slow the wheel. These brakes fit onto the bosses that come as standard on cross frames and forks. Some have started to investigate using hydraulic disc brakes as seen on MTB bicycles but the extra weight tends to override the undoubted stopping power and most still use cantilevers. On some designs cyclists use extra brake levers attached to the top of the bars that allow the rider to brake whilst on the tops of the bars. This can provide a lot more control and alternative hand positions, but most riders still prefer to use the standard STI levers.

Alternative Uses:

Cyclo-Cross bicycles have a variety of uses aside from being off-road. The strong frame, easy gear ratios, standard road wheels and upright geometry make them ideal for winter riding, commuting and fast off road leisure riding.

I also used mesh racking to display products. And fitted it to the back doors and roof. Great for display at cycle events. I fitted a awning to the side of the van to work from in all weather. I have my tools in the side and I use the back as a show room. I find this is the best all-round working conditions. There is just not enough time, to work in the back of the van. Its not usual to have a fleet of bikes to work on.

I take customers details. They drop there bike to me, with the key to there lock. If they are commuting to London. I would take cash payment or text them my bank details with the amount and they would pay on-line banking. I would lock there bike up in the bike racks. Put there key and invoice in to a plastic bag, and I would leave for them to collect from the taxi rank. Also I have a sign board advertising I am there every Wednesday from 6am. And I also do while you wait repairs. If they don’t pay on-line, they would leave payment cash or cheque when they collect there bike lock key.
